These last few years have been challenging for all of us. Our students are no exception. Through the challenges of COVID-19, school dismissals, distance learning, loss of instruction, and the financial burdens that many families experienced and continue to experience, these have been really tough years. In these few years, my students have missed out on critical social emotional learning, and are having a hard time regulating their emotions independently, leading to many challenging behaviors. With this project, we can create a place to help students learn how to self regulate big emotions in a safe, and productive space. The most important part of self regulation and the skill development therein, is creating an environment where kids can feel safe enough to express how they are feeling. After they can feel this safety to express themselves, it takes guidance and reassurance from someone who cares about them to model appropriate strategies and demonstrate effective tools that can be used. Every item in this project, including the chairs and books, is part of a plan to teach these strategies and provide a safe, calming environment to practice these strategies. With a designated area within my special education classroom, when big emotions arise, we can help students learn coping skills and self regulation without interrupting the flow of learning for the whole group.
