The materials and supplies that I am requesting are vital for teaching my students how to use their voice and "talk back" in effective ways! Ultimately, these items will help my students learn more about their own world and how to communicate better within that world. The Eliciting Sounds text will help me learn the most effective ways to teach articulation of speech sounds. The animals and food items will help with categorizing, finding meaning between words, and determining similarities/differences between familiar items. The preschool play sets (e.g rocket launcher, Mr./Mrs. Potato Head, Critter Clinic, etc) will help establish cause and effect, build language for requesting/rejecting, and expand vocabulary use in natural communication situations. The Vocabulary in Context and Mini Mystery books will enable students to learn and hone language comprehension, language expression, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. The puppets and cars will align with my social language curriculum to help students evaluate social scenarios and determine the best socially appropriate responses, while still taking in to account individuality and diversity.
One of the most important aspects of communication is learning what to say, when to say it, and whom to say it to; working on these skills improves communication interactions with peers, teachers, family, and community members. These materials would make a world of difference for me as an speech and language therapist trying to help my students communicate with all the people in their world. I am required to individualize lesson plans to target specific skills based on student needs. Each and every one of these items would be used on a weekly basis -- and many items on a daily basis. These materials would contribute greatly to my ability to facilitate individual lesson plans to target language development, improved communication skills, and a more engaging learning environment.
