The students will read a graphic novel about a key historical figure who inspired or directly influenced the civil rights movement in the United States. We will talk about the significance of visual storytelling and the impact it has on the story. These books will lay the foundation for their personal grasp of historical events and the impact sharing these stories can have on future generations. The students will then do research on another key figure in the civil rights era and create a short comic of their own depicting major historical events. This project will take their understanding of the curriculum to a deeper level and allow them to express themselves with art and storytelling. I have done similar projects in previous years and it is always something that my students remember.
