Students in special education, more than any other learner, need to be given opportunities to use all of their senses when learning something new. These students require specialized instruction tailored for their individual needs.
The majority of my students are 'tactile' learners who use movement, testing, trial and error and a non-traditional learning environment to retain and recall information.
This can be accomplished by using virtual reality.
Immersive learning applications used in virtual reality can give students more practice with classroom concepts, allowing students to engage their lessons on another level. By making learning more accessible and memorable, VR technology has assisted teachers in educating, motivating, and increasing classroom interaction for students of all ages and abilities.
Using virtual reality, our special education students will be able to experience things in a way that could only be done by going on a very expensive field trip which we could never provide. Using this technology can take them to different countries, different time periods, science experiments, different jobs, and more. Virtual reality has been shown to boost motivation, enable engagement, strengthen cognitive skills, improve short-term memory, and make learning more fun. The greatest impact is on communication skills and social interaction both of which are very important skills for students with special needs. I am very excited to see what this technology will do to help my students continue to learn and grow and achieve their goals.
