Studies have shown that children who are behind their peers in reading struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy. Low achievement in reading is also the common denominator in school discipline, attendance and dropout problems, and juvenile crime. Problems in reading can affect performance across several academic content areas, occupational endeavors, and other functional skills that are used in everyday life activities. Study after study has shown that struggling readers need high-quality instruction and intensive support in order to learn essential reading skills. The data also suggests they need time to practice applying those skills. As a reading interventionist, I work extensively with students to help them improve specific reading skills such as letter naming, initial sounds, phoneme segmentation, and comprehension strategies. I implement activities and strategies that help my struggling readers develop their ability to read and write. In order for reading interventions to be effective, fundamental components of teaching and learning such as scaffolding, shaping, connecting to prior knowledge, motivating, and providing opportunities to practice skills need to be implemented. The products I have selected will provide my students with the opportunity to practice all of the skills they are learning in a multisensory way that is essential for their success.
