I am requesting class sets of several novels and headphones for our class. Reading novels help students connect by creating empathy and understanding. This reading practice enables students to safely experience different situations, cultures, and peoples. As students have been isolated throughout the pandemic, they have not had the same opportunities to read different genres and be guided as they experience more challenging texts. The more students read, the better readers they become. These books will empower my students to become better readers and empathetic citizens as they are enveloped in the stories, increase their vocabulary, and see examples of good writing. As they read engaging novels, students will be able to regain lost reading levels and go beyond. They will also become better writers, editors, and critical thinkers. I'm also ordering headphones that students can use to listen to audio books, podcasts, and other multi-media sources. For example, many reading programs have text-to-speech capabilities that students can access when the text is too difficult for them. This will allow those students not reading at 7th grade level to still access independently.
