All of the items for this project will be used to help and teach students to self-regulate when they are experiencing big or heavy emotions that impact their learning or social awareness. Materials also have been selected to engage fine and gross motor skills in counseling. These include materials to be used as sensory tools or as open-ended media to discuss difficult topics. Books have also been added to my project to be used to help students learn skills and navigate through emotional and mental distress through literature and characters. For example, I currently read a book with students who have a difficult time regulating themselves when they feel angry. The students are able to relate and gain a perspective with this character and we are able to discuss the character. I have found that students who are often not aware or feel unsafe about expressing emotions are able to do this through a character in a book because it opens up the discussions and helps them to feel safe to talk about what they may be experiencing. Including more books in my "toolbox" will allow me to use these books with students who need skills to learn to cope with anxiety, overcome obstacles, sadness, and other difficult emotions. Items will also be used to help teachers create a "calm down corner" so that individual students may use the items to help them calm down and then to enter back into learning. There are enough materials in this project to serve both of my schools, that is over 1000 students! These materials will be used in my classroom lessons that I teach to every student, individual counseling, and small group counseling at 2 schools.
