My school is a modest preparatory academy with a small teacher-student ratio. However, our school has very limited novels that mirror the students we serve. Eighth grade is the highest grade we teach and this is my first year as the 8th grade ELA teacher. My heart goes out to my students because we just finished reading The Crossover, which is the only novel we have in this grade level that mirrors their culture, family dynamics, and everyday middle school challenges. Seeing themselves reflected in a written work truly sparked a love for reading so much so that they eagerly returned from winter break with an attitude of expectancy to read more independently. We have a one hour guided studies time frame every day, along with the option to grab a book when in-class assignments are completed. This project will greatly nurture a new-found love of reading for my students that will inspire them to be life-long readers. I am so excited about providing an opportunity where they see people like themselves do exist and are indeed found in the pages of a book!
