As an elementary art teacher, I am thrilled to be part of a community that has learned to adapt and flourish despite the challenging circumstances of the last two years. One of the things that has impressed me most in this profession is the skill of educators, students and their families in using technology to fill deficits caused by a multitude of obstacles. One of the obstacles I've seen as a result is difficulty in expressing creativity after coming through such a structured time. I hope to model how technology can be implemented in art, as well as their other classes. I have been using Apple products both personally and professionally for years, and have only scratched the surface of possible uses both in the classroom, and in the event of a return to distance learning. Being able to conduct drawing demonstrations on an iPad would give me freedom to walk around the classroom as I draw. Proximity to kids in need, is both crucial to social-emotional fulfillment and something that ALL students have had a deficit of since the pandemic began. The ability to interact more with my students, rather than being chained to a document camera would help in so many ways. Even the advantage of a clear digital drawing rather than the difficulties of poor lighting conditions or vision struggles will help participation and creative growth be more accessible to every child. In the event of an online switch, this iPad will help me get more learning materials and creative outlets into the homes of my students, who are not otherwise given many opportunities for individuality in distanced learning scenarios. I truly believe the ability to create with confidence will help kids in every aspect of their education, both in classroom and outside it.
