COVID-19 has taken a toll of everyone, especially those who already struggle with high anxiety or regulating high emotions. Changes in classrooms and playgrounds procedures, limited in-person contact with family or friends, implementations of masks, limited physical touch, and fear of death or illness are all common circumstances of this pandemic that heighten emotions. Focus on social-emotional wellness is more important than ever before. Flexible seating and tools to teach social and emotional wellness will help create a calm haven for my students where they can better focus on learning. Many of my students struggle with understanding their strong emotions and how to regulate them. This causes these amazing boys and girls who already struggle with academics to focus more on the emotions they cannot regulate than on their schoolwork. Teaching social skills and emotional wellness to my students will provide them an opportunity to control their emotions rather than have their emotions control them. Newly learned social skills can help them make friends and properly advocate for themselves when necessary. Flexible seating and fidget tools will allow my students to choose options to help expend extra energy and movement while maintaining focus on their academics. Donations to this project help my special education students have a greater chance at success in school and in life.
