Inquiry based learning is a student centered approach to education. Math students learn new skills working together and explaining their methods. This type of instruction teaches students conceptually instead of procedurally. Learning conceptually increases retention and mastery of skills needed to solve new problems on their own. We're committed to teaching math using this active learning approach. The biggest challenge with inquiry based learning is getting students to want to share their ideas about math. Most of my students are either shy, afraid to make a mistake, think it's not cool, or just want to get the answer from the 2 students that do like to talk about math. I've come across some great ideas to increase the discourse with my students. With a new Ipad air I can easily share students work on our smartboard. I've seen this activity alone raise student motivation, they want their work displayed when it's good! It's proven that tablets increase engagement and motivation. The Ipad Air will work great with the my school Macbook. In this day and age teachers have to create two curriculums, in-person and online. We've been lucky at my school to stay in-person since the start of the 2020 2021 school year. Our biggest challenge has been quarantines and absences. I feel like my online curriculum is solid. Everything students need is available to them when an unexpected absence comes up. Whether it's one day or two weeks, my students have access to their math lessons. I record a lot of instructional videos using a doc camera. The biggest complaint from students is that my camera isn't very good. With a new high definition camera my students will be able to see my work better and we can start closing the gaps caused by the last couple of years!
