Since the COVID-19 pandemic has started, students are doing more and more of their learning at home. We challenge all the 6th graders in our middle school to read 20 minutes per night (which is proven to positively affect their cognition, problem-solving, and vocabulary). To help motivate students to complete this challenge, we hold a raffle every quarter and give away prizes (mostly books) that they really want to win. For every 10 books read, a student gets 1 raffle ticket. Since starting this challenge, I have seen a spike in reading fluency and test scores. Our sixth grade team has multiple students every year who read 60+ books at home, and their academic achievement reflects it! Prizes like these motivate students who are hesitant readers to try their best. I fully believe every student can reach this 30-book goal, and students feel so proud after each book completed at home! Some of my students, especially those from less supportive families or lower socioeconomic backgrounds don't have access to books at home, so part of my intention with these prizes is to put books into kids' hands so the learning continues after school!
