The focus of my project is getting students to enjoy math. Right now, math is hard for a lot of my students because they have missed so much. Limited interaction with teachers and friends has affected their learning. I have a saying posted in my room that we talk about a lot... Everything was hard before it was easy! We talk about how for babies, the simple task of just walking is hard but once kids figure it out, it becomes second nature. Learning math is the same. Students need to practice the basics of math enough that it become second nature to them. Following COVID, this has been tough for a lot of my students and if I can engage them by making math fun, I can get them to practice! As I am working with the "at home" students, I will be able to utilize the Wacom Board to better interact. As I am working with the "in person" students, we will be able to use the writing tablets when working in small groups or practicing certain skills. Items like the classroom supplies including colored paper, pencils and erasers, colored pencils and even tools like rulers and protractors can be used by all students to make math more engaging - with enough supplies I will even have some I can "lend" to students who are still working at home. Using colored paper is especially helpful for making handouts/assignments fun and easy to organize/recognize what we are working on. The games and rewards will be used to make math more engaging and fun so that the students WANT to practice while interacting with each other. I am hoping that I can even generate enough interest for an afterschool Math Club! With enough practice even math can be second nature!
