Schools have quit updating and purchasing science and social studies textbooks and our state standards have recently changed. These subjects are often taught by a teacher's own creativity and research of lessons to teach curriculum standards. By using relevant, age-appropriate science articles and hands-on activities, students will increase their critical thinking skills as they apply scientific learning and methods in the world around them. By having Scholastic current events and the latest scientific findings in a kid-friendly text and more hands-on experiments, I expect my students to grow from our inquiry-based learning and class discussions from these new science materials. In addition to classroom use, I would like to apply specific topics and activities when they connect with our Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Club extracurricular meetings and competitions. These magazines and class lab activities will reinforce my students' learning about ecosystems, weather, energy, and space concepts.
