I didn't start out as a PE teacher. I taught in a regular classroom for years and then later switched to teaching PE specialty. What I love about teaching is I get to help children of all ages and levels. I see them work on a skill and see them feel successful, when at times they may struggle with certain academics, but in PE they gain confidence in their abilities. When children come to my class we learn about being active and the health benefits of a physical lifestyle, mentally and physically. We work on specific skills like running, jumping, dribbling, kicking, and all the things to help children be active and learn about various sports. At my school, I am lucky to teach both regular and special needs children in my PE classes. We have collaborated over the last couple of years on an inclusion program where the special needs students combine with a class of their peers where they can learn and help each other develop skills like balancing, jumping, running, etc. I know my students will love jumping over the hurdles and balancing on the duck walkers. I also love teaching the kids different sports, especially ones that maybe they haven't had the opportunity to learn. Volleyball is one of those sports. When we've done it in the past the children get very excited about it, but I find that standard volleyballs are too firm. The trainer volleyballs would greatly help the students practice the various types of hits using a lighter and softer ball to hit.
