To help support my student’s social-emotional learning and growth during this challenging time, I would like to refresh our counseling room and create a beach-themed space where students can slow down, be in the present moment, and have healthy outlets for stress. Each student is different; some find comfort while building with bright sensory pieces such as magnetic tiles, some like to challenge themselves with jewelry making, and others decompress through coloring intricate patterns. Unfortunately, We don't always have these options at school. At times, my students also lack basic resources such as effective, suitably fitting face masks and nutritional snacks to get them ready to learn. The vision for our new counseling space is centered around beaches— a much-needed atmosphere during these bitter, winter months in New York City. Our new area will include bright decor and activities which will allow the kids to engage with mindfulness techniques including coloring, awareness, yoga, and healthy movement. Additionally, soft lighting, art supplies, beads for jewelry making and sensory games will lift their spirits with fun options. Healthy, nut-free snacks and tye-dye themed K95 masks will be on hand for students who need a pick-me-up to start their day. These resources will help students build concentration and confidence while improving their emotional regulation. Instilling mindfulness is supported by research to reduce challenging behaviors in the classroom by providing a physical outlet for children to express themselves. Lastly, integrating relaxation techniques during our counseling sessions will help students manage stress in a healthy way, setting a strong foundation for stress management as they continue to grow. Thank you for your continued support to bring these unique opportunities to my students!
