I am requesting a US/World map for my classroom, some flexible seating options, and sensory materials. My students come from many different backgrounds. Some come from different parts of the U.S. and some from different countries. I try to make my classroom learning material as culturally diverse as my students. We read about different parts of the world and the country, but I don't have a map that I can show the students exactly where I am talking about. By getting a map in my classroom, I can bring the different backgrounds of my students more alive. This will increase inclusion, as well as deeper learning. Not only will these materials help increase inclusion and cultural unity; they will embrace and tame the energy that students have within them. My little 3rd graders have a lot of social, economic, cultural, emotional, and family stress. This makes focusing very difficult for them. Also adding to the problem of focusing is the effects of COVID-19. My students often ask if they can do school online or be homeschooled. This was never mentioned before COVID-19. My students are struggling with the strict rules, long hours of sitting, and focus needed to be successful in school. I am requesting wiggle chairs, wiggle cushions, and fidget bands for desks. These students need more choice and more chances to move around a little bit, as they learn. These supplies will benefit my students and myself, by helping them channel their energy and be more culturally aware and accepting.
