Having a variety of building blocks, tools and craft supplies will provide my students a great start to an accessible maker space in my classroom. Students learn through their own personal experiences and having materials for a Maker Space will generate and opportunity to have experiences that they will learn through. Whether the materials are used for in person or distance learning, the learning opportunity is invaluable. Our Maker Space will be available for daily use and will reinforce the state standards that we are working on in class. I will use the Maker Space to integrate STEAM into our everyday learning through task cards and structured activities for the students to follow. In addition to academic learning, I plan to use this Maker Space to practice character building skills such as collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking. Providing students the opportunity to develop these skills will impact their abilities for the rest of their lives. Due to a lack of student accessible storage in my classroom, having a moving cart and bins will allow for the materials to remain available for students to use at all times. Providing bins and organization materials will ensure items stay in good condition and can be used for years to come. It is very beneficial for young learners to have the opportunity to learn through play and a Maker Space is a perfect way to provide structured play time and enough freedom to allow their brains to grow and create through play.
