Historically, high schools reward and recognize only a select few members of the student body--but every student has accomplished something that should be celebrated. OHS has a student population over 1,000, but only 15 sing in the a cappella choir, and only 5 play on the basketball team, and only 1 gets the lead in the school musical.
I try to change this pattern of exclusivity by planning, sponsoring, and running events in the library that prioritize inclusivity. We promote our Friday Open Mic as the friendliest place to perform--and although the performances aren’t the most polished, everyone gets wild applause. And our monthly juried photo shows allow students to display work that isn’t always perfect, but nonetheless represents the creativity of many students.
More students need to be recognized, and I want to provide better equipment for them to showcase their talents.
