My students say they hate to read or they can't find anything interesting to read or they don't have time to look for a good book. I plan to counteract those attitudes by purchasing an attractive library cart and 50+ books for independent reading. The books I have selected are high-interest and vary in reading level. I have included a variety of genres and reading levels. One of the biggest indicators of student success is a student's willingness to engage with the written word. A small, nicely curated, and beautifully displayed classroom library of books will ignite the joy of reading. Academic gains will follow. I know this from personal experience, the research I have done, and from watching what works for master teachers. In addition to the academic learning that independent reading provides, good stories are a way to connect with others and process experiences. My sophomores are wary of Covid and that has bred some cynicism. I believe good stories will help them shed that cynicism and see ways to emerge in a hopeful way from these hard days.
