Much of the work that I do with students is very personal and in-depth work that they do not often share with anybody, let alone a stranger. Therefore games, ice breakers and indirect ways to approach talking about difficult subjects and teaching oftentimes uncomfortable and embarrassing social skills are great ways to break down initial defense barriers and give lasting and meaningful correlation memories to help retain the information. Yoga and mindful movement have been shown to help people process significant amounts of lived trauma. Being able to give students the chance to break away from the sterile environment of concrete school buildings and hard metal and plastic chairs and desks for stretching, meditation and mindful movement in unique physical positions is a wonderful way to break up the routine of the school day and get them back into the mood and mindset of learning.
