Now that students have returned to the classroom, it is time to show them how fun, exciting and rewarding learning can be. Students are craving a back to basics, hands on education. It is time to take a break from screen time and use their hands and imaginations to learn and create. I want to use these resources to reteach my students to use their imaginations, to create and to experiment. Students need to know that learning doesn't just happen on a screen when sitting still. I want to show students that art, experiments, movement and hands on creations can promote learning in any subject. Research shows that well developed fine motor skills are a predictor of academic success. Using play dough, paint brushes and Legos helps with fine motor skills. I will be using these manipulative in many different subjects. Legos are a wonderful tool for math. Using Legos help students better understand the concepts of skip counting, place value, math facts, addition with regrouping, multiplication arrays, area & perimeter, graphing and fractions. Play dough/clay is great for many science and history projects/experiments. They will be used as unit culminating activities to build models of the Great Wall of China, water and land formations, mapping skills, life cycle charts, season diagrams and insect models.
