The class-set copies of books--Things Fall Apart and Their Eyes Were Watching God--will be used in the classroom for a classwide novel study; these books were chosen specifically for their ability to speak to universal, human themes from a perspective that has been historically marginalized in the literary canon (of particular importance for our population of students, who themselves can feel marginalized in society today). In combination with these class novels, the other novels selected will be used to bolster our class library and diversify the kinds of stories and authors readily available for students to check out. There has been a noticeable shift in reading interest for students in the midst of Covid-19, and these books have been carefully selected to reflect a contemporary sensibility and engage reticent readers. Many are graphic novels, and all are modern, taking place in cultures recognizable to students.
