In my opinion, reading is the most important skill that students gain in school. The more that students read at school and at home, the better equipped they are to do well in school and function in society. Putting interesting books in students' hands is key to helping them grow. Not only will they develop academic skills, but emotionally they may find that they can connect and learn from characters in books who have similar or different lives than they do. I have found that having high-interest books in my classroom makes all the difference.
