Growing Our Reading With Graphic Novels!
Funded Nov 30, 2022The graphic novels that were purchased have helped some of the students learn to enjoy reading! The students who already enjoyed reading, they have learned to compare and contrast the graphic novel to the regular novel, when possible. Some of my students have not read a graphic novel, so they have learned about the different parts of a graphic novel and how they are read.
In my classroom, reading is done in small groups where the students have similar reading abilities. This allows us to read at the same pace, then have discussions about the reading the students did.
The graphic novels have also excited reluctant readers to read, because they think they are reading a comic book. These readers have actually had a hard time stopping where they are supposed to, because they want to read more!
Thank you, so much!”

Funded Jan 28, 2022In this time of technology, I have students, and parents, who appreciate the opportunity to read a physical book instead of a tablet or phone screen. With the GENEROUS donation to my class of books, I have seen an even greater awakening and growing excitement for reading.
Some of these new books, the single copies, were bought with the purpose of reading enjoyment for my students. Many of my 211 students have asked repeatedly to read these books. As soon as I put these books on my shelves, they practically RAN to my classroom to check them out! Oh the smiles and giddiness I have been able to observe and enjoy as they have done so!
The rest of the books (the ones with multiple copies of the same title), I plan to use in small literature groups with my 6th grade students. As I did a book talk about these titles, many of the students kept calling out that they want to read all of the books! I use books like these to teach reading comprehension and many, various reading skills and strategies. In the past, I have seen lots of reading improvement, especially with a variety of books for the students to choose from.”
