The data is in, and the "COVID slide" is real. Many of my students are reading several levels below their current grade level, and not a day goes by without a student telling me that they hate reading. I'm learning that when students say they hate reading, they really mean that they hate the books they've been reading. If they have a book that they are interested in, reading and literacy suddenly aren't chores--they're fun. However, since I am a first year teacher, the in-class book options students can choose from are quite thin. My goal is to fix that! By donating to this project, you will be giving my students a classroom library that makes them excited to read. I've selected nearly 80 books that represent a variety of interests, genres, reading levels, and styles to better serve my students. As my students find books that grab their interest and push them to keep reading, their reading and literacy levels will soar. That's personalized, student-driven learning at its best! There is nothing more magical than watching a reluctant reader lose themselves in a book for the first time. Thank you for making that a possibility for my 8th graders.
