Play-based learning is the best way for preschoolers to learn. Having many different activities available and enough space to do them gives the students an opportunity to choose what they want to do. This helps them learn to plan, make decisions, and express their desires. My students are more engaged when the activities are child-directed and they are able to choose from a wide variety of materials. They stay at the center for longer periods and are engrossed in productive play where they interact with their peers and increase their social skills. During the recent pandemic, social skill development was heavily impacted. Instead of encouraging the students to play and interact together, I had to worry about social distancing and wearing masks. Vital social skills such as sharing, taking turns, requesting, and social communication were sorely lacking. The dress up outfits and magnet set are activities that encourage peer interaction. The large table will provide the space necessary for several students to work side-by-side together on an activity. Lastly, the fidget toys are an important component for my special education kiddos who have sensory issues and need to have something in their hands at all times. I have seen how motivating materials can increase engagement and encourage social interactions. I know the additional items in this project will help us grow even more!
