The STEM tools/manipulatives I requested will be able to do the following: enable my students to understand the links between the manipulatives and the mathematical ideas they represent. They will be used to identify simple geometric shapes and describe their properties and to develop spatial sense.
They will help my students recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement. They will encourage the use of a 3-point grasp. This is needed for an efficient pencil grasp in school. A child has to use the thumb and first 2 fingers to stretch a rubber band for these puzzles.
They are a key tool to support the learning of composition and decomposition of ten, which is one of the most significant building blocks in foundational math knowledge. Ten frames are also incredible tools for reinforcement of combinations of 5, 10, and 20. Additionally, reinforcement of these numbers helps develop strategies for mental math!
These tools can also be used in a STEM engineering building Center. As the student investigates the tile parts, students recognize and continue to form conjectures, verify them, and then apply them. Though students need to explore patterns freely, students appreciate challenges, such as being asked to build a plane, boat, or a building.
The Literacy tools/manipulatives: Sentence Building Box, Magnetic Story Board, Giant Sentence Build Cubes, Word Building Tiles, and the Word Family Flip Books can be used to promote reading and writing skills, particularly in the early stages of literacy development in First Grade. My students will use word cubes and tiles to build sentences or letter cubes during small groups to create words while isolating specific vowel sounds and consonant blends.
These tools/manipulative will build my students' confidence and make learning enjoyable and unforgettable.
