As a school librarian, I am in a unique position to help students in ways classroom teachers can't. With all the stress, anxiety and depression that is evident among students, I can help alleviate that during the day. Students come to the library to do something fun, relaxing, and physical. My project helps support that. Students can come to improve their mental health by playing some simple, physical games during the day to help them relax and unwind for a short period of time. Students are also looking at computer screens for most of the day. They are working online in class, at home, and many continue that with social media and gaming. Therefore, I am also asking for reading incentives to help kids put down their screens and pick up a book. By conducting a reading program with incentives kids actually want, I can help build a love of reading and again, help with mental health by providing something other than screen time. Based on the need for computer breaks and physical breaks to help with mental health, I am requesting four activity games (cornhole, ring toss, football toss and ladder ball). As incentives for students reading and reviewing ten books, I am requesting bluetooth speaker, mini-fridge, circuit activity, and a handheld electronic game. The bins and label marker are to help me keep an organized library to better facilitate student needs.
