Literature can influence students to be better citizens, advocates, and people. Each novel has the potential to teach us about ourselves, a mirror, or to teach us about others, a window. Books that are mirrors help us see possible futures, solve problems, and know that we are not alone. Books that are windows teach us that difference is not a threat, it is a benefit. They teach us to respect and engage with diversity by illustrating different perspectives, customs, and ways of thinking. To help my students celebrate diversity, engage with difference, and effectively engage in global dialogue, they need diverse texts. Unfortunately the accessible books are largely Eurocentric, thus excluding diverse students from the mirror and white students from the window. This project is intended to create a set of books that can be both a window and a mirror. They will be used as independent reading materials.
