Flexible seating allows students more choice and autonomy in the classroom. It allows them to choose not only a spot that they can work best in, but a spot that works best for them. My early learners thrive with their educational goals when they can choose where to work. Currently, students are working at their desks in their chairs with options during centers and independent work time to work with clipboards at the carpet, lap desks, or cushions in our writing center. My students are much more motivated, empowered, and able to persevere with difficult tasks when they can work where they feel most comfortable. The products that I have selected will allow my students to have more options as to where they work in a school day. They also help my early learners learn communication and critical thinking skills as they navigate their choice in seating and how taking turns. The options I have chosen are long lasting, durable, and light weight, which makes them easy to clean and move throughout the classroom. In addition to flexible seating, I have included nonfiction magazines from Scholastic. These magazines allow my early readers to have access to more nonfiction texts in our library at an age appropriate level. I have seen how much more interested and motivated, my learners are when they are reading about animals, events, and science. The magazines from Scholastic give them another literacy source for facts. They will be able to read them at school and take them home with them to reread with their families. Since the magazines are monthly, it also builds excitement around reading as my students wonder what the next issues will be about. It also increases their critical thinking and literacy skills as they learn to read fact boxes, labels, and headers.
