These materials will allow my students to read about stories and experiences that open their minds and introduce them to important social issues in our day. They will be able to choose a book that interests them and then read in structured literature circles. This experience will be a chance to engage in conversations with peers about literature and relevant topics, helping them to become critical thinkers and engaged citizens--not only in our classroom community, but the community as a whole. My students learn best when they are able to choose books and topics that are of interest to them, so having a large variety of diverse books to choose from will give them autonomy in their learning. I have students at varying levels of literacy and English proficiency, so I hope to provide historical novels, memoirs, graphic novels, and contemporary novels at a wide range of Lexile levels. The breadth of options will help students to engage in high interest topics while also reading books that are fit for their individual reading levels.
