3rd Grade is a crucial year for fact fluency and basic math operation practice. We spend much of our time memorizing skip-counting songs, talking about strategies, playing math games, and working to build fluency and automaticity. We do drills on white boards, as well as on paper. We try to switch it up regularly so they stay excited about learning! Adding math games and new whiteboards to my class will help to reinforce these important skills and help my students to improve their math fluency. My students get so excited about new games and love hands on learning! I have also requested books to reinforce social emotional learning. Several of my students struggle with regulating their emotions and I hope to be able to reinforce important character development by reading these books to my class. Some of the character lessons I want to focus on with my students include kindness, gratitude, and confidence. These books will give me a great place to start! Another reason I want to focus on positive character is my students quick rise of frustration when things start to get hard. I have noticed a huge increase of this in the past few years. To help limit frustration, I would like to add some organization items to my classroom. This includes things like mechanical pencils for every student, pencil pals to help keep their pencil on their desk, class paper bins, and just overall a simple and straightforward classroom setup so students know exactly where things are. Small prizes are given out as motivation and incentives. My school has really tried to increase our positive reinforcement and decrease our negative reinforcement this year. I have seen huge successes in allowing kids to work towards prizes during lessons. These small items will help keep this motivation alive!
