The students I work with experience a wide variety of difficulties that could or could not be related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the time, trauma from past or current experiences they have or are facing, instability in their familial relationships, and/or inconsistency in their lives with who they feel they can trust make it difficult for them to function in any environment, but especially the school environment. As a novice practitioner, I give students a safe space where they can come to communicate and process past or current stress, anxiety, or trauma they experience. This anxiety and stress can act as a barrier to all things school-related including academic learning, social learning, and/or emotional learning. COVID-19 provided an even greater reason why social and emotional well being needs to be a priority in the school setting. This project can make that happen! With these tools (Legos, fidget toys, and SEL books), I will be able to better serve students in my two schools well and can support them by meeting their needs in a variety of ways. With these resources, I will be able to support a wide array of individuals from a range of backgrounds and experiences. I will help the students I work with develop the coping skills and strategies they need to be successful and to be well in the future.
