Have you ever found yourself clicking your pen, tapping your leg, or doodling in order to focus during a presentation or in class? We all seek ways to help calm or focus our minds when it is easy to be distracted. It is difficult for many of my students with disabilities to focus during instruction. Learning is hard for them and their minds can easily wander. When kids are able to move around or get out their wiggles, they can refocus on the task at hand. Since moving around a classroom can be distracting to others, students need a way to "move" without harming the learning of others. Wiggle seats allow students to move, but still remain seated. Many students also benefit from the use of "fidgets." These small objects can be held in their hands to help focus or calm anxiety. Some people might view fidgets as toys, but I find they really help my students with ADHD and anxiety.
