The magnetic atoms will be used throughout my eighth-grade curriculum as students learn about the scale and proportion of molecules, chemical reactions, conservation of matter, phase changes, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and the cycling of carbon throughout earth systems. The idea of how matter changes is a consistent theme of the eighth-grade year and apply to three of the four strands. Students need a way to easily change molecules from one type to another to show the rearrangement of atoms that occurs in all these situations. The concept of conservation of matter and cycling matter is difficult for eighth-grade students to make sense of and the requested magnetic atoms will give the students the ability to quickly and easily change the molecules from one type to another for strands 8.1, 8.3, and 8.4. When students have a manipulative in front of them that they can physically change with ease it allows them to make better connections and make sense of what is happening in the world at a level that they cannot otherwise see.
