Students sit all day long in school. They get tired, they get bored, and inevitably lose focus—and we see the results in their work. Some have gone so far as to compare sitting and the sedentary lifestyle to using tobacco and nicotine products. Have you heard? Sitting is the new smoking. Sitting on the Sit'N'Gym therapy balls sneaks exercise into the classroom. Providing students with the opportunity and encouragement to move in class helps build the body and the brain. Active seating on stability balls encourages students to move and as the body and muscles are activated so is the brain. Dr. John Ratey, author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, has presented time and again about the brain-fitness connection. In his TEDx talk, "Run, Jump, Learn!", he starts by telling us that exercise is for the brain. The mind and body are connected. When we work on both, we get the best results. I have seen this to be true. Just like we sometimes have to sneak vegetables into our youth's diets, we need to sneak exercise into their daily routines. Sitting on the balls engages the core muscles, improves balance, and engages the mind.
