The abundance of diversity in my classroom requires an increase of nurturing and care in order to allow for optimal learning. I have a student who is an English learner and came from a background within the year, not knowing any English. It is hard for a student like that to be placed in a classroom, with skills unlike others. I want them to feel comfortable in setting, but willing to break the barriers by going beyond the comfort zone into the learning zone. Making mistakes and having differences is strongly encouraged in my classroom. Several students have a hard time being confident, or having focus, and need time to recuperate for themselves without a plethora of stimulants to trigger anxiety, which is where the flexible seating and fidget-type items come into place. Some students have a hard time being in the classroom for extended periods of time with the same amount of students nearby that can be easily overwhelming. The ethnic diversity also plays a significant role in the classroom and the need to embrace differences. I would like more diverse books that encourage students to love being themselves and embracing the skills that they have, being proud of what they’ve learned, regardless of how much or how they learned. I also strongly encourage my students to express themselves in any way they’d like, by being creative in coloring, drawing, and creating. I would like supplies that can support creative expression for students to be comfortable with themselves and especially their journey in learning and their education. Our classroom uses old materials from previous years and the students deserve proper and newer supplies that can encourage full-expression without being discouraged of not having a certain item.
