Each item has a variety of uses during speech and language therapy tasks. Wordless picture books can be used for kids to demonstrate their story telling skills, as well as articulation skills. These same books can be used for labeling nouns and verbs without the distraction of words. Special needs toys are used to empower children who are non-speaking by enticing them to communicate. These toys make it fun to socialize. Specialty toys are expensive to buy but allow students to demonstrate knowledge of cause and effect, and participate in social interaction. Education toys that allow kids to match, use magnets, or show simple routine steps is a way to work on core vocabulary words and nouns. Core words are also called "power" words. Such as: get, turn, push, match, down, up, in, out... Simple toys allow the SLP and student to target "power" words during therapy.
