Reading is not innate. Reading is a learned skill that can grow and open countless doors of opportunity in life. Reading, like any skill, must be practiced daily to hone the skill. Reading in an environment that is relaxing and of choice is vitally important to the enjoyability of the skill. Reading must be taught, practiced, and must be done in a positive relaxing environment.
During the pandemic and remote learning, reading books became one of the only sources of refuge for some of our students who were already avid readers. For others, the lack of classroom structure and remote learning led to a lack of reading, which pushed some students further and further behind not only academically but socially-emotionally with pandemic isolation and no desire to pick up a book to escape.
My students are amazing humans who will use your gift of flexible seating options to further hone their skill of reading in a positive relaxing environment. While my students are in our classroom I want ALL of them to have the opportunity for a literary escape daily. A time each day where they can forget their problems and just escape with their author of choice. I wish for my students to develop a love of reading that will follow them into their adulthood and create lifelong learners. Please help me encourage a love of reading and give our classroom flexible seating options for our literary escapes.
