  • Inviting Space to Learn

    Funded Jul 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to the classroom. It has truly helped create an area to enjoy reading. The students love working in the space during silent reading and small group. The area has also created a sense of comfort when students are having a bad day - they request sitting in the chairs while still participating in class. There was so much demand for the spot that we had to put in a rotation for one of the classes.

It is the little things that mean so much to the students. Know that your contribution has made a difference and brought some joy to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nelson

  • Creating Readers Through Graphic Novels

    Funded Jan 24, 2022

Thanks to your generous donations, my students were greeted with new books. The students were so excited when they saw the boxes arrive but even more once the unwrapping began.

The graphic novels and manga were a huge hit! The students loved seeing more books that represent their cultural diversity and experiences.

The new shelf allows the students to quickly see the graphic novels and other new books in one place. It is much easier for the students to access than the bins that only show one book.

As we near the end of the school year I am receiving questions about how they will make it through the summer without the books. We will make sure they know how to access the library in person and digitally before they leave for summer. Thank you for helping to build this love for reading with these students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nelson

Help students have access to diverse, high-interest graphic novels for school and home. The list of books was created based on student representation and student interest. Many of the graphic novels were selected based on author/character representation that aligns with our demographics. The manga is selected as it is of high interest for the students but also that it builds social connections between the students as they bond over reading them. Currently, the only storage we have are bins which only allow them to see the first book. The students gravitate to books based on the visual of the cover. I have selected a cart that will help them see the books better. The students benefit greatly from the use of graphic novels in the classroom but even more, if they are able to recognize themselves in the books. Students have the ability to borrow books to enjoy reading at home. Help the students continue to build on their enjoyment of reading.
