  • Wellness of Music

    Funded Dec 10, 2024

Often, music books contain band arrangements of popular songs, classical pieces, or concert band repertoire. These books are used to help my students prepare for performances, allowing them to learn and rehearse pieces that they will later play as a group. Depending on the complexity of the piece, students may begin by learning individual parts and then slowly integrate into full-band rehearsals.

Thank You for the new materials. As my students progress, I introduced a new piece from the book something a little more challenging, like Ode to Joy or a simplified version of Star Wars. The project could be to perform this piece at the end of a month, allowing the students to work on learning their parts individually, but then come together to rehearse as a full band. This collaborative effort reinforces their sense of ensemble playing, and they get to experience the joy of playing music together. At the end of the project, they will perform it for parents or other classes.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Barry

Thank you for your donation. The materials were greatly needed.

Mouthpieces are key in teaching my students the correct embouchure (the way they shape their lips and position their mouth around the piece). In band class, my students often start with just the mouthpiece to work on forming a solid embouchure before even playing the full instrument. This helps them build the necessary muscle control for producing a sound.

As for clarinet mouthpieces, my students can definitely throw some students for a loop if they're new to the instrument or have never seen one before. The reaction often ranges from curiosity to confusion! Clarinet mouthpieces, which are quite different from brass mouthpieces, can look strange at first glance. Some students may wonder how it works, especially if they're used to more traditional brass mouthpieces. Once they understand the mechanics, though, they tend to get more comfortable.

With clarinets or saxophones, the mouthpiece works with a reed to create sound. In band class, we focused on getting my students to position their mouth correctly on the mouthpiece (forming a solid embouchure) and making sure the reed vibrates properly.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Barry

  • Music Can Improve Your Mental Health

    Funded Aug 20, 2024

Thank you very much for your generous donation. Our music/ band class were in such a need for the new resources. The laptop was used for downloading music, recording the students music, and teaching the students how to read the music notes form the laptop. The students loved using the laptop to record themselves playing the instruments. The mouth pieces was being used to play the instruments. My students love having their own mouth piece. Thanks to your donation my students can have their own. They were filled with excitement when they saw the resources and they didn't have to share. My students feel they can relax and be themselves when they are playing the instruments.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Barry
