Within the U.S. education system, there is a standard of traditional texts that have been used for several decades. While the lessons and richness remain within them, the representation they offer students is often limited. It is my hope to expand our reading set to include diverse authors and stories about other parts of U.S. American society. This will invite conversations and exploration of the various parts that make up the collective American heartbeat. Representation cannot be undervalued when it comes to young people tapping into their education. Additionally, the story being styled as a graphic novel introduces my students to a new and exciting way of seeing a story told. There are a plethora of factors to learn with graphic novels that are harder or altogether impossible to achieve with normal text novels. For instance, looking at how an author/artist used color to illustrate certain themes or looking at moments in the story where the art is allowed to speak in place of any words leads to powerful discussion and great in-the-moment lessons. The world continues to advance, and our teaching and learning should grow with it.
