Our mindfulness and calming room within the school counseling suite is a safe place for students to retreat when anxious, academically frustrated or unable to cope with academic and social dynamics. The resources will allow students to engage in artistic activities to de-escalate and experience a sense of calm. By using sensory materials, coloring or other art centered activities, it will allow for reflection, de-escalation and mindfulness. The goal is to enable students to use artistic expression while learning ways to self regulate and manage their stress and frustration. Additionally, it will allow students to use healthy coping skills and self management to reduce disciplinary and suspension rates all the while improving social emotional well-being and address sensory overload. These sensory resources will benefit our most vulnerable and emotionally disabled students who might fight others, use threatening language, or walk out of school when they face intimidating academic or perceived awkward social experiences. Lastly, materials will be useful when we want to implement counseling group opportunities with students when addressing topics regarding healthy relationships, grief and conflict resolution.
