My students would benefit from more diversity in the physical activities that they can participate in. As a new teacher, it was important for me to understand the needs of my students. At the beginning of our school year, I communicated with staff and students about what their past PE classes were like. I got a lot of positive feedback, but the one thing that stood out to me that I would like to change is adding some brand new games and activities that they had never heard of/participated in before. My students are especially engaged in PE when they are working together in smaller groups of 2-4 students. When I put all of this together, I thought of the perfect game for them to learn how to play, and it involves equipment that we do not have at our school: Spikeball. Spikeball is a net sport that is very similar to volleyball, but can be played in smaller groups. This is a game that can be played indoors or outdoors as well, so when this Chicago winter finally ends, we can enjoy the beautiful outdoor atmosphere of this great city and play what is referred to as "the greatest game you've ever played". I first learned of this game on a family vacation, and I have had it in my head ever since! It is a great game for students to play in small groups, in any setting, and it can be played by students of all skill levels.
