Social-emotional learning is a very important subject that needs to be taught, especially after many students have had limited social opportunities due to the pandemic. As a school counselor, a large part of my job is to teach classroom guidance lessons to all students, lead small groups, and counsel individual students. I have found that using books and different activity cards really helps with student engagement and these books cover a wide variety of topics. I teach classroom guidance lessons on topics such as Being Kind, Friendship, Responsibility, and Growth Mindset. These topics are all included in different books that I selected. I also have to teach these lessons to a wide age group. Therefore, some topics require different books for the younger and older students. In small groups, these books can be used to teach strategies to better cope with anger and self-regulation skills. The activity cards help to start the small group or calm the small group back down before taking the students back to their classrooms where they will have to sit in a chair and work. Mindfulness is a very important tool when it comes to self-regulation and the activity cards are a great resource to teach these skills. Students at my school often experience situations at home that may be tough for them, such as divorce, deployment of a parent, and death. These books are also helpful in situations like these. The books can often help the child understand the situation better.
