As a music teacher, one of my main goals is to provide my students with meaningful performance experiences both in and out of the music classroom. Many of my students have expressed interest in learning a musical instrument and I completely in support of this; learning an instrument is a wonderful experience as it can help students to learn a sense of hard work, perseverance, creativity, and confidence-building. However, the majority of my students come from low-income households and their families simply cannot afford the cost of an instrument to keep in the house. For many of my students, the only time they are able to express themselves musically is when they are in my classroom. Having a set of ukuleles in my classroom for students to be able to learn and perform with would be such a positive addition my school community! There are limited types of instruments in my classroom that I have enough for every student to own. Typically students would learn recorder during their time in elementary school, however with the COVID-19 pandemic it is unclear if or when this will ever be a possibility again. Learning ukulele would be a fantastic replacement to this hole in the curriculum, or an additional experience for students should learning recorder ever be a viable option again. With a set of ukuleles for my students, the possibilities for music creation and exploration would be endless. I can only imagine the excitement on my students' faces if they were to have the opportunity to learn this instrument, make music together as a class, and perform for their school community. Please consider donating to this project; you would be making such a difference in these incredibly deserving students' lives!
