It is imperative that schools do all we can to make sure students have what they need to be safe and well-prepared to learn when they come in the building each day. Many of the students I work with walk or take public transportation in order to get to school, meaning they are frequently exposed to harsh winter conditions. A student who does not have appropriate cold-weather protection might dread coming to school in the morning and, on the coldest days, may be unable to come to school all-together. Hats, mittens, scarves, and warm socks are small articles of clothing but can make a big difference in a student's health and safety throughout the winter months. The more comfortable a student is coming into school, the better prepared they are to be an engaged student the rest of the day.
