The students I work with have disabilities. Many have trouble with anxiety, anger, Autism behaviors, and ADHD behaviors. My goal, as a teacher, is to help them self-regulate and monitor their own feelings. Helping them realize the role they play in their own education is crucial for their success. I have several books and activities that focus on self awareness. I need these tools to help them be successful in school. Many of the students I work with have not only behavior concerns, but academic concerns as well. Their behavior needs to be in control before any learning takes place. My school psychologist suggested many of the books I am requesting.
I work with students in small groups. We teach students to read up until the 3rd grade. In the fourth grade our focus shifts from learning to read, to reading to learn. Students with learning disabilities, autism, and health impairments need more hands-on learning experiences. They need high interest, easy to read text to help support reading strategies. I want them to be able to take information from passages or books we have read and use critical thinking skills to answer specific questions about the text.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has had a negative impact on students. We are seeing more students behind from where they should be. Small group, direct instruction, and hands-on learning activities will help the students I work with. I work with students across all grade levels. I have a lot of resources for students in the lower grades, but am need of resources for my students in the upper grades.
