With these basic chess materials I hope to help our students learn to play the fascinating game of chess through a combination of short lessons and hands-on chess games. Given these resources, along with solid, growth-oriented instruction, students will not only learn basic chess rules, concepts, and gameplay, but will also be exposed to broader concepts of learning and development such as strategizing, visualization, trial and error, questioning, and reflection. Our students are curious and eager to learn, and giving them these basic resources can help them channel their love for learning into a game many consider to be one of the great metaphors of life and have fun while doing so. Playing chess gives them the opportunity to develop valuable skills such as patience, focus, creativity, planning for the future, and emotional management—skills that will serve them well in all areas of education and life, not just over the chess board. Having just a few sets of chess pieces and boards will enable students to actually implement learned concepts over the chessboard, giving them a concrete application for their knowledge. With this I hope to give them practical, engaging, hands-on chess instruction that not only sparks a love for chess but for learning in general.
